Silt Fence Green

Overview

Silt Fence Green ImagesProperly installed and maintained silt fences allow sediment to settle from runoff before water leaves the construction site.  This prevents sensitive natural habitats like streams, lakes and storm water catch basins from being polluted with soil fines.  Layfield's Green Silt Fence is made from a polypropylene fabric with reinforcing strips for added strength.

This Green Silt fence is available in two styles; un-supported in rolls 3' x 100' c/w wood stakes installed every 6' o.c. and a reinforced product that is supported with a 14 gauge steel wire.

The reinforced Green Wire Back Silt Fence is (Green-WBSF) held vertical with 5' steel T Posts that are sold separately by Layfield.   Roll sizes come 100' in length and have 48" wide fabric making it ideal for sites with ground irregularities.   Layfield's Green-WBSF will stand up to the most demanding site conditions where there is high runoff and in regions that have high winds.

Typical applications for Layfield's line of Green Silt Fence are; below the toe of exposed and erodible slopes, down-slope of exposed soil areas, around stockpiles, along streams and channels and along the perimeter of a project site.

Design and layout of Green Silt Fence products should conform to the following standards and specifications:
- maximum slope length of slope draining to any point along the silt fence shall be 61 m (200 ft) or less
- slope of area draining to silt fence shall be less than 1:1 (V:H)
- wood stakes and steel posts shall be positioned on the downstream side of the fence.

Silt Fences are not effective unless the fabric is trenched and keyed into the ground.  They also need to be maintained by ensuring all split, torn or slumping fabric is repaired.  Inspection of a silt fence is recommend prior to a rain forecast and making all necessary maintainance repairs if required.  In addition, silt fences should be inspected after rainfall events.  Sediment shall be removed from the base of the fence before it reaches 1/3 of the barrier height.
