1. Product Description
Erosion Control Blankets (ECB's) are Rolled Erosion Control Products (RECP's) made from straw, both straw and coconut (coir) or coconut fibres which are bound together with photodegradeable or biodegradeable or UV stablized polypropylene netting. ECBs are a cost effective means of establishing vegetation where steep slopes or high erosion conditions exist. Once the vegetative cover is established, the ECB bio-degrades into mulch. The ECB creates an excellent micro-climate for the propagation of seeds, while protecting the open soil from direct erosion from rain, wind, and water flow. The ECB is placed after soil preparation and seeding by unrolling over the area and stapling to the ground. Both 6 inch (150 mm) and 8 inch (200 mm) long staples are available from Layfield. Layfield ECB's are typically for short term (12 months) or extended term use (24 months). For long term or permanent applications (> 36 months), please refer to our Turf Reinforcement Mats (TRMS's).

3. Installation

Prepare site and grade smooth to design profile and remove debris and large rocks and place topsoil if required. Seeding of site should be conducted before the placement of the ECB. Dig a 6 inch X 6 inch anchor trench both up-slope and down-slope of the area to be covered. Secure the blanket with staples in the trenches every 12 inches and backfill and compact. Roll the blankets vertically down the slope or in the direction of flow for channels. Staple patterns will differ for each product or steeper slopes, a typical installation will staple the blanket at 2' horizontal and 2' vertical spacing. Overlap blankets about 6 inches at all sides and staple. Place downslope blanket underneath upslope blanket to form a shingle pattern. More staples may be required to ensure blanket is sufficiently secured. Intimate contact between the ECB and the soil is critical to a successful installation. Any voids between the soil and ECB can result in erosion under the blanket. For channels an anchor trench is required along the top edge of the side slope as well. 7. Maintenance
Once installed, Rolled Erosion Control mats should be inspected once a month and after every significant precipitation event until vegetation is well established. Repair any damaged areas promptly. Native species of vegetation are recommended to minimize maintenance. If required, the areas can be mowed, however the mower setting should be as high as possible to prevent catching the mower on the netting products.
