Installation and Construction Services
1. Installation of Containment Systems Layfield operates two construction groups and a dedicated service group. Our construction department specializes in geomembrane and floating cover installations while our service group concentrates on the installation of specialty products including Geotube sludge dewatering tubes, Aqua Dam, Flood Control Aqua Dam, Spray Applied geomembranes, Vertical Wick Drains, and maintenance services. We provide installation services across North America.
Since 1978 Layfield has been an industry leading supplier and installer of containment systems. Layfield has achieved Approved Installation Contractor status through the International Association of Geosynthetic Installers. Layfield specializes in complex installation jobs under very difficult conditions and tight timelines.
We place, weld, and test millions of square meters of material each year. Our installation crews are trained in quality control, safety, and project management so that every new Layfield geosynthetic installation is as reliable as the last. From the smallest secondary containment system, to the largest floating covers, Layfield's installation crews are ready to tackle your critical environmental protection project.
2. Installation of Specialty Products Our service group concentrates on the installation of specialty products including:
- Aqua Dam
- Aqua Dam Flood Control
- Geotube sludge dewatering tubes
- Spray Applied geomembranes
- Vertical Wick Drains, and
- Maintenance services.
Layfield provides installation services across North America. For specific installation instructions of the above mentioned specialty products, refer to the installation sections included in each Product Cut Sheet.
3. Materials Installed Installation of Field Assembled Materials Some of Layfield’s installation services involve the installation of HDPE field assembled geomembranes, covers, and related materials. Field assembled products are materials shipped to the field in roll form and all deployment, seaming, and testing takes place on site. HDPE installations are all field assembled and require specialized deployment, welding, and testing equipment, as well as skilled installation and supervisory personnel.
Installation of Shop Fabricated Materials
Layfield provides fully fabricated, or partially fabricated geosynthetics that can then be installed in the field. Where installations require multiple panels of fabricated geosynthetics or the installation of floating covers Layfield’s construction group can provide full installation services. Fabricated geomembranes such as Enviro Liner® (EL), HAZGARD, and GeoFlex can be welded using the same techniques as HDPE geomembranes.
Installation of Specialty Products and Other Geosynthetics
Layfield also installs Aqua Dams, Flood Control Aqua Dams, Geotube sludge dewatering tubes, Spray Applied Geomembranes, and Vertical Wick Drains. In fact, any geosynthetic that you require can be installed by a skilled Layfield crew.
4. Types of Installation Contracts Design-Build When the geosynthetics content of a project approaches 50% of the contract price Layfield recommends that the owner consider a design-build contract. This type of geosynthetics contract is common in reinforcement geosynthetics applications, and in floating cover or baffle curtain installations in existing facilities. Design-build projects allow Layfield to make the maximum use of cost saving proprietary techniques and to propose alternative design methods.
Installation by General Contract
In projects where the geosynthetics content approaches or exceeds 50% Layfield should also be considered for the role of general contactor, as our personnel are very competent with earth work and mechanical subcontracting. As the general contactor we take the viewpoint that the environmental protection aspect of the job is paramount. When Layfield manages the project all trades are required to focus on making sure that their work will compliment the geomembrane or geosynthetic system. This is the best situation from an environmental protection standpoint as the environmental aspects of the job become the first priority.
Installation by Separate Contract
Often, the installation of a geomembrane or floating cover on a project is the single most important aspect of the environmental protection design. When the environmental risks are high it can sometimes cause difficulty on site to require that the geomembrane supply and installation proceed as a subcontract. Since earthworks and most other sitework needs to be complete and acceptable prior to geomembrane placement we normally recommend that a separate contract be issued by the owner to the liner installer. This prevents any issues arising from defficiencies in earthworks or in the preparation of the ponds.
Installation by Subcontract
Although we recommend a separate contract for most lining and cover installations Layfield frequently provides specialty supply and installation of geosynthetics and geomembranes on a subcontracted basis.
On-Site Technical Assistance
On smaller projects, international projects, or remote sites, Layfield can provide one or two trained geosynthetic specialists to direct local installation and perform required welding. Normally on-site technical assistance is provided for fabricated geomembranes where only one or two seams are required. On-site technical assistance is contracted at a daily rate plus expenses. International, and remote site installations employ on-site technical assistance to show local staff how to install materials such as fabricated geomembranes and geosynthetics. On-site technical assistance is not normally offered for HDPE installations as the complexity of HDPE requires a full Layfield installation crew.
Off-Site Technical Support
One of the advantages of fabricated geosynthetics is that they can be installed by local crews without a Layfield technician being on site. Layfield provides telephone support to it’s customers that are installing fabricated geosynthetics. We can provide direction to the local installers when problems arise and can help them solve problems in a timely manner. Off-site technical support is most commonly used with fabricated geosynthetics (both liners and geotextiles) for small projects, remote sites, or international work. Often there is no charge for off-site technical support when the geosynthetics material has been purchased from Layfield.
