Geoweb Slope and Channel Protection

Overview

Geoweb® geocells are made from virgin High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) that has been welded together to form a series of individual cells (similar to a honeycomb). There are a number of cell depths available, from 75 mm to 200 mm (3" to 8”) tall. Layfield now offers the Presto Geosystems’ line of geocell called Geoweb® in Canada. The Geoweb® system is the original, the best designed, and most recognized geocell system in the world.

Geoweb sections are delivered in a compact, collapsed form, and are expanded on site and staked into place. Fill materials are then placed into the open cells and then leveled. In load support applications, once the fill materials have been placed the stakes can be removed. ATRA® clips and high strength tendons are used in applications where stakes are not practical (such as in a geomembrane protection application). Geocells are excellent for stabilizing infill and controlling erosion. They can be placed on a slope and then infilled with a variety of erosion protection fills, such as topsoil/vegetation, gravels, crushed rock, or even concrete. The geocell structure holds the infill material in place on the slope and prevents settlement, or washout from wave action or other erosive forces. The Geoweb system is effective in retaining erosion protection materials on geomembrane side slopes. In other shoreline erosion control applications a non-woven geotextile is often placed under the Geoweb material to separate the sub-soil from the infill. On steeper slopes, the Geoweb system can help to hold the soil in place where it would normally slide down the slope.

The Geoweb system is also beneficial for load supporting applications. By confining the fill material, the Geoweb structure improves load-bearing capacity, prevents lateral spreading, and reduces the fill requirements by 50% or more. Often the Geoweb system can improve the load-bearing capacity of fill materials that are usually unsuitable, such as sands or on-site aggregate. The Geoweb structure can be used to make these otherwise unsuitable fill materials into a solid, high strength base. For more information on load bearing applications, see our separate webcontent on Geoweb Load Support System.
